About this Episode
After a two-month break, PGAP returns with a live recording of the Albany community forum: “How do We Plan for Albany's Growth: Perspectives on Degrowth and eco-friendly design.”
This event was coordinated by the Albany Community Environment Centre (ACEC) to address the ‘big picture issues’ impacting many of the single-issue conservation campaigns impacting one of Australia’s fastest growing regional cities.

PGAP host Michael Bayliss was one of three panelists at the event, including Julie de Jong, director of H+H Architects, and Paul Kotsoglo, town planner.

Michael Bayliss and Julie de Jong
The three panellists spoke to the following forum questions:
- Is it possible to plan for Albany’s future growth so that the lessons learnt from the Yakamia experience are not repeated?
- Is future growth possible without impacting further on our natural environment or social amenities?
- If not, is it time we rethink Albany’s growth altogether?

Lynn MacLaren, MC
Response and feedback from forum attendees demonstrated an appetite for broader discussions on questioning growth, including Degrowth principes and population policy.
All three presentation were recorded live at the event, now on PGAP for posterity. We are also pleased to provide a link to Michael’s speech script and Paul’s slides, both available from the PGAP blog.

Many thanks to Sustainable Population Australia, who provide the perfect mix of support for this podcast, while allowing us the space to work independently. We really appreciate SPA’s new campaign theme: ‘Live Within Limits’. Did you know that SPA has a position statement, calling for an end to population growth in Australia? At time of writing, they are 20 signatures short of achieving a milestone of 20,000. If you resonate with the position statement, we warmly welcome your assistance in helping SPA reach this magic number.
